Perplexity has launched an AI tool for “deep research,” competing with similar products from OpenAI and Google. It cites speed and accessibility as its main advantages, TechCrunch reports.
Perplexity AI announced Friday the launch of a new “deep research” feature, a tool that generates detailed answers, aimed at professional users. This comes in the context that OpenAI and Google have launched similar products under the same name, Deep Research.
The new feature allows users to select the “Deep Research” option in the Perplexity platform, automatically generating a detailed report, which can be exported as a PDF or shared via Perplexity Pages. According to the company, the AI uses a complex process for search and analysis, adapting its research plan as it obtains new information.
One competitive advantage of Perplexity is its accessibility: non-subscribers benefit from a limited number of free queries, while paying subscribers receive unlimited access. In comparison, OpenAI charges a $200 per month subscription for the Deep Research feature.
In tests, Perplexity Deep Research scored 21.1% on the Humanity’s Last Exam benchmark, outperforming models like Gemini Thinking (6.2%) and GPT-4o (3.3%), but lagging behind OpenAI (26.6%). Another advantage is speed: most tasks are completed in under three minutes, compared to 5-30 minutes for OpenAI.
